New Gallery Space revealed as part of The Edge’s renovation

Curated by Jez Dolan, the first exhibition features contemporary artist Gary Steer

Following an extensive refurbishment, The Edge is  pleased to announce it’s new gallery space showcasing high-quality new contemporary visual art by professional artists based in the North-West, curated by artist Jez Dolan.

Open daily to the public and based in the new foyer at The Edge, the exhibition space will feature new contemporary artists three times a year.

The first exhibition is Apricity: An Exhibition of Paintings by Gary Steer

“Over the bleak Covid-19 hit winter of 2020/21, I painted a series of pictures with no real intentions in mind other than to escape from the relentless bad news about the pandemic and to experience the pleasure that I get from mark making, be it with a brush or a pencil, charcoal or pastels. The following pictures are what I came up with, deliberately not so political in nature, usually light hearted or romantic. The body of work in most basic terms points toward me looking for light and colour in dismal times.

After a few years of trying out all kinds of mediums and styles, I subconsciously arrived at a semblance of a style. Usually figurative in nature, predominantly fairly abstract in tone, the main feature of the painting is – without a doubt – colour. I became really interested in artists from the early 20th Century, particularly the German Die Brücke movement and the more well known Fauvist style, pioneered by Matisse and André Derain. I began to experiment by putting flat colours next to each other, to see which would vibrate or ‘sing’ – eventually working out a palette for a new painting.

The subject of the works sometimes have a narrative, on occasion they stem from an old photo or a staged scene, usually about something that caught my imagination on that particular day.”

The Gallery space will be open Monday – Friday 9am – 9pm and Saturday 6pm – 9pm
